What Is Cat Renal Failure?

Renal failure occurs when the kidneys can no longer filter toxins and balance bodily fluids.

Renal failure is broken into two categories: chronic renal failure and acute renal failure.

The Two Types of Renal Failure

Chronic Renal Failure

Chronic renal failure is not reversible, but it is manageable.

Chronic renal failure is the progressive destruction of your cat’s kidneys.

Primarily a disease of older cats, chronic renal failure progresses slowly but is ultimately terminal.

Increased blood pressure due to hyperthyroidism is a common culprit in the development of chronic renal failure in senior cats.

Acute Renal Failure

Acute renal failure tends to be more aggressive and shows symptoms within a few hours or days after the initial onset. Acute renal failure can be reversed with aggressive treatment.

Eating poisons, such as lilies, raisins, grapes, radiator fluid, certain pain pills like ibuprofen, and extreme dehydration can cause acute renal failure.

Acute renal failure is an emergency.

If you suspect your cat has been exposed to any of the above substances and appears sick, contact your veterinarian immediately.

If your cat has been diagnosed with chronic renal failure, we can help!

People Also Ask:

1. Is chronic renal failure reversible, and how is it managed in cats?

  • Chronic renal failure is not reversible, but it can be managed. The condition involves progressive kidney damage and typically affects older cats. Although terminal, the progression is slow, allowing for effective management strategies to enhance the cat’s quality of life.

2. What causes acute renal failure in cats, and can it be reversed?

  • Acute renal failure is often caused by factors such as ingesting poisons like lilies, raisins, grapes, radiator fluid, and certain medications. Extreme dehydration is also a potential trigger. Unlike chronic renal failure, acute renal failure tends to show symptoms rapidly and can be reversed with prompt and aggressive treatment.

3. When should I be concerned about acute renal failure in my cat, and what immediate steps should I take if I suspect exposure to harmful substances?

  • Acute renal failure is considered an emergency, and if you suspect your cat has been exposed to toxins like lilies, raisins, or certain medications, immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat appears sick after potential exposure, as early intervention can significantly impact the outcome.
